It’s true: Facebook is losing out to it’s younger, hipper rival Snapchat for appeal among teens and young adults.
According to the latest research from eMarketer, Facebook usage from those 12-17 years old will fall 3.4% this year, an accelerated decline from the 1.2% in 2016.
“We’re seeing teens and tweens migrating to Snapchat and Instagram,” said eMarketer analyst Oscar Orozco. “Both platforms have found success with this demographic since they are more aligned with how they communicate – this is using visual content.”
“Outside of those who have already left, teens and tweens remaining on Facebook seems to be less engaged, logging in less frequently and spending less time on the platform.” eMarketer even suggests that some teens are going so far as to ‘skip’ the Facebook adoption stage (calling them “Facebook nevers”), and going straight to the rival platforms.
In true ‘one that got away’ fashion, Zuckerberg’s spurned acquisition, in the 12-17 and 18-24 ages for the first time in 2017.
Nearly 4 years after the failed procurement, Facebook’s problem with keeping teens happy has continued to grow, redeemed only by the company’s success at using Instagram to successfully clone Snapchat’s key features.
